People on the streets have some dope fits

Or at least they do during Fashion Week. In NYFW, CPFW... all the FW's really, street style might tell us more about oncoming and current trends than the runway itself. It gives us the opportunity to look at fashion from the consumers' perspective. But not just any consumer, consumers who are true style aficionados. You can find everyone from celebrities, to paupers strutting the streets in head-to-toe drip. So, here are some of my favorite looks and the fashion lessons they teach us:

I speak factually when I say, a pop of color never killed anyone. I'm typically an all-black (Wednesday Adams flow) girl, but I am living for these three looks. When you break them down, they are nothing out of the ordinary: cargo pants, fleece jackets, and a skirt. But, the color is what makes these stand out. You don't have to look like a rainbow threw up on you, but by adding a neon fleece, a yellow tote, or complementary colors such as red and green, you give your fit that needed "oomph".

Here are some colorful pieces I've seen recently while fake online shopping:

For those of you who are allergic to color, don't worry! I have other tricks for you...

When in doubt, go brown. All-black looks are hard to master, and (while classic) can be confused with boring. In order to have a perfect black monochrome, your blacks have to match. Believe it or not, almost no black fabric looks the same, and when the difference is clearly visible, it can completely dismantle an outfit. Meanwhile, brown comes in all hues and tones that can be put together and look put-together. Be original, brown is the new black.

And please, never be afraid to mix and match. This goes for just about everything: proportions, colors, styles, etc. In order to really understand this, let's go back to basics: Big Top Little Bottom, Little Top Big Bottom. When an outfit looks proportioned, it has a balance between the amount of fabric on your legs and torso. Like a maxi skirt with a crop top, or shorts with a sweater.

But, when you want to make a look distinctly "unbalanced", you can wear everything big or everything little. For example, this gorgeous gorgeous girl is wearing mostly large, loose-fitting clothes. Making a statement. She continues to make this statement by mixing and matching patterns, and textures.

Pattern, texture, color, and proportion are (what I believe to be) the pillars of mix and match. Master these, and dull outfits will become a thing of the past.

You can also, mix up styles. The girl on the left, she's wearing clothing that could've been easily selected from the men's section, but she paired it with a sparkly eyeshadow. This merging of feminine and masculine aspects is a classic way to (again) make a statement. The same goes for the girl on the right. She's wearing a delicate dress with kitten heels and on top of that, this hefty piece of outerwear. A combination that at first, leaves us like "what?", but ultimately, works.

This is a tremendously condensed list of my favorite "wild fashionista sightings" in New York this past week, but I hope that with them, I could teach you a thing or two. Also, let's pray together to our lord and savior Phil Oh for documenting these insane street-style looks.

With love,

Your favorite fashion know-it-all
